Shepherd's Voice, The
Hearing Jesus' Voice Knowing Jesus
Want a cool way to teach about the meaning of John 10:1-15? This OPENER is the perfect way to do it.
Get all of your students to mingle in the middle of the room. Next, have one adult leader for every 8 students hand out colored blindfolds to 8 different kids in the group. (In other words, if you have 24 kids, you will have 3 adults handing out 8 blindfolds apiece: 8 red, 8 blue, and 8 green.) The color of the blindfold represents the “flock” the student is now in. Tell the students to take note of the color of their blindfold and then have each of the students put on their blindfold in a secure way, ensuring they cannot see.
After everyone has been blindfolded, announce that each colored flock has a shepherd. The shepherd will be calling out directions and instructions for his/her flock in order to move them into their pen. (The “pen” can be as simple as an area in the room, or as elaborate as a sectioned-off space with ropes/cones. If you choose to use ropes/cones, WAIT until after the students have been blindfolded to set it up, else they will automatically know where to go.)
The shepherd will not be allowed to touch the sheep. They can only use their voice. The first shepherd to get his/her entire flock in the pen, wins.
NOTE: To make this really interesting, have a few “false shepherds” giving bogus instructions to the sheep. This will easily illustrate the voice of the enemy who wants to kill and destroy us.
Wrap Up: When the activity is over, you are ready to have your discussion on John 10:1-15.
