Prayer (Quiet Time) What's the Point?
Main Point: Relate prayer to students as something not to be intimidated by, but to want to enjoy regularly through ‘quiet times’ with God. This discussion should challenge and motivate, but not “guilt” students into their prayer life.
Supplies:
- Anything you need for your challenge or game.
- 15 Excuses Opener (see Discussion Starter)
- Video or DVD of Meet The Parents (Ben Stiller) – Cue the video/dvd from 0.00.00 from the Universal logo to about 0.23.42. The scene is at the dinner table when the father asks Stillers’ character to say grace before the meal. He fumbles his way through a hysterically made-up prayer.
Kids arrive: about 6:30-6:45
- Make them feel welcome
- Learn names and interests
- Give newcomers a New Person form
Bring it together: about 7:15pm. “Hey, glad to see you all here. Welcome to ???”
Introduce newcomers: Give them a blow-pop, skittles, or Snickers bar, etc.
Youth Challenge or Game: Play TP Tell All: Divide into groups of between 3 and 5. Hand each group a roll of toilet paper with the instruction that each person is to "tear off between 3 and 5 sheets" with no clarification. Once everyone has their tp squares, in their groups, each person must tell one fact about themselves for every square of TP they tore off.

15 Excuses I Can Use For Not Having a Quiet Time by David Boehi (revised by Danette Matty)
Good to be read one at a time by several students on stage, like a goofy skit).
- What? I can’t miss (latest popular tv show) now! I’m too into it!
- I haven’t seen the latest episode of “Survivor 41,” either.
- I need to spend more time with my family...yah, that’s it…my family.
- I feel overweight...I need to exercise to burn off those calories I consumed today.
- I’m too sleepy in the morning to read my Bible.
- I’m too sleepy in at night to read the Bible.
- I’ve already been to church once this week. Isn’t that enough time for God?
- This Physics textbook is so exciting...I’ll start having quiet times more regularly after I finish it.
- I have way too much homework.
- My “It’s-All-About-Me” and “Studmuffin Today” magazines came in the mail, and I’ll waste away if I don’t read them tonight!
- I’ve got so much to do around the house. I have to clean my room, walk the dog, scoop its poop, change the litter box, pick on my little brother.....
- I just don’t feel like spending time with the Lord.
- I have to go to work after school. By the time I get home, I’m too fried to spend time with God.
- It doesn’t really hurt me to skip my quiet time today, does it?
- It doesn’t hurt to go a week without a quiet time, does it?
Does it?
Seven days without prayer makes one "weak."
Break up into small groups.
Small Group Discussion:
- All of us can relate to at least one thing on that list! If you can’t, you’re more spiritual than me! What are other things that make it hard to pray sometimes?
- What’s the hardest thing about prayer?
- Do you ever feel like not praying at all? Then, what’s the point? Why pray anyway?
- What are the wrong reasons to pray?
(Option: Prearrange to have a couple of students “pray” w/wrong motives; see Options - Skit.)
Look up and read James 4:2b - 3 (NIV) "You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."
- SHOW CLIP HERE, then say something like, Of course that was one of the goofiest prayers I’ve ever heard, but let me ask you something: Does God hear prayers like that? Why or why not?
- Let’s look up Romans 10:13, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” What’s the difference between “calling” on the name of the Lord and “seeking” Him?
Wrap-up: Encourage your students that Jesus, even though He was fully God, even He “sought” the Lord, didn’t just squeeze God in when He needed Him; and that when we seek Him, we’ll find him. That’s the point! It doesn’t matter how, where, or when we pray so much as it matter that we pray regularly. God loves to hear from us, period!
Close in – you guessed it – prayer. You can pair students off and assign them as prayer partners for the next 2 weeks. Or, you can have everyone get in groups of 3 and pray for one another, or have everyone find a place to pray individually while a worship cd plays in the background.
Optional Scriptures, Points, or Questions:
Skit: The Wrong Kind of Prayer
A couple of students were praying in their rooms the night before their very first night in youth group. If you could have overheard them, here’s what you would have heard:Guy: Dear God, I am so excited about youth group tomorrow. I just pray that You would draw me…into the presence…of a hot girl! I just know you’re gonna bring me there and the light’s gonna shine down on that girl. Lord, I know you hear my prayer.
Girl: God, I just pray that at this new youth group, it will be all girls – no stupid boys. Just girls – but no mean girls.
Guy: God, I know that You’ve laid it on my heart to be a missionary…to the females in my youth group. You’ve given me all the love and compassion they need. I thank You for this call, Lord. It’s not an easy call, but I’ll go. Here I am, send me!
Girl: Oh, Lord, I pray that my hair won’t frizz up during youth group…and that everyone will be nice to me…because I hate mean girls….especially mean church girls! And if there are any dumb boys there, and they get any ideas about talking to me, which of course they will, I just pray that they leave me alone.
Guy: God, I just have this sense that tomorrow when I go to youth group, there will be some cute girl there who’s ready for me to minister to hear. Lead me, by Your spirit, to that girl. Your word says that when we need to talk Your spirit will give us the words to say. So I pray that You’d give me the pick-up line from heaven! And I thank You that You’ve blessed me with such a pretty face and a muscular body. The combination of my self Your spirit, no girl can resist. God, you do want me to have a Christian girlfriend, don’t you? So, please point her out to me tonight!"
Girl: And, Lord, don’t let anyone act dumb around me…especially boys looking for cute girls like me at youth group! But if, by chance, it’s Your will for me to meet a boy tomorrow night, that it won’t be a stupid boy...but maybe one of new boys.
- How can we maintain a consistent prayer life when we get bored or we’re not sure anything’s happening?
- Does a “quiet time” necessarily have to be quiet? Explain your answer.
- What are some creative ideas for keeping your quiet times fresh?
- 2 Chronicles 34:1-8 - Josiah was 8 when God gave him authority. At 16 the Bible says he began to seek the Lord, while he was young. When he was 20 he began to clean up his city – he had authority and influence. When he was 24 he had authority, influence, and impact.
- What does God get out of your having a regular prayer life?
