Modesty/Body Image (Girls)

According to "World Entertainment News Network," Hollywood star REESE WITHERSPOON hates her body so much she has vowed never to reveal it on screen again. The LEGALLY BLONDE star, 28, sported a bikini in the comedy hit - but she confesses she is wracked with insecurity about her figure and will never bare her flesh again.

Witherspoon admits she also has very prudish ideas about nudity: "There's something about overt sexuality. Like it's scatological or something. I'm all about trying to make movies that have nothing to do with my body. I'm prudish and nervous. It makes me nervous when I see a woman with her midriff showing. I would never do that on purpose, and if it happened by accident I'd be mortified. The way I was brought up, I wasn't allowed to wear black and I wasn't allowed to wear bikinis. It was all about what was appropriate.”

Use Witherspoon’s comments as a discussion opener or even in the middle of a discussion on Modesty and/or Body Image with girls. One point could be that Witherspoon cites her upbringing and insecurities as motives for not wanting to wear revealing clothes.

Talk about healthy attitudes toward one’s own body, the discipline to not compare one’s body with others, and attitudes and statements like the following:

  • “My body is wonderful – flaws and all. I respect it too much to show it to just anyone.”

  • “My body is a treasure and a gift – only to be opened and enjoyed by my husband. In other words: it’s too good for the rest of the world!”

  • “I don’t flaunt my body around because…I don’t have to (in order to know how valuable I am or to affirm my sexuality to myself or someone else).”

Scriptures:
1 Cor 6.19-20 (NLT),
Or don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

(The point here could be to honor God with our body by being healthy, but not obsessed.)

Phil 1.20 (NIV), I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

(Ask how one’s immodesty could bring shame versus how Christ can be exalted in one’s body.)
