Temptation
Overcoming it, or Stuck Under it?
Main Point: We can beat temptation with God’s help!
Supplies:
- 3 or 4 hammy students or leaders to do the short skit (see below under Discussion Starter).
- Anything you need for your challenge or game.
Students Arrive:
- make them feel welcome
- learn names and interests
- give new people a New Person Form
Bring it Together: (about 15 minutes after start time) "Hey, glad to see you all here. Welcome to INSERT NAME OF YOUTH GROUP!”
Introduce New People: Give students a Blow-pop, Skittles, or Snickers bar, etc.
Youth Challenge or Game: Choose an anywhere game from our “Games” page(CLICK HERE) Invite two students to volunteer and challenge one another. (Soda Slam, Surgical Glove Blow-up, Joust, or just a burp contest. Be creative!)
Announcements: Upcoming activities, events
Discussion Starter: Open with a short, funny skit showing a couple of students giving in to temptation in any given situation (party, disrespecting a teacher or parent, lying, cheating, etc.). You could have a third student overcome the temptation in a creative way.
Matt 4.1 reads, "Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil."
Even Jesus was tempted. It’s a reality that hits all of us. What are you going to do about it? Glad you asked. Let’s talk about it.
Break up into small groups.
Small Group Discussion:
1. What do you think are some of the biggest temptations students face today?
2. What were some things that stood out to you in the skit(s)? Who could you relate to?
3. Let’s read James 1.13-15.
James 1.13-15 - "When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
What does this verse say about the nature of temptation?
4. There’s a 4 stage process of temptation: - Think it.
- Want it.
- Do it.
- Pay for it.
At which of these stages would it be easiest to resist temptation? 5. Are there certain situations where temptations are more readily available or where temptations are stronger? Name a few.
6. “Triggers” are situations, scenarios or influences that open the door or make you more vulnerable to temptation. What are some triggers that people have? (people, places, being alone, media influences, or even feelings like anger, loneliness’, frustration, etc.)
7. What are your “triggers?”
8. Let's get real and go around the circle and name one temptation you face. (Emphasize, “What's said here stays here.”)
9. What would help you at these times? (Let students talk, affirm their ideas, and encourage specific standards and future accountability.)
10. Is there something you can do prior to the temptation to prevent it? (Stop it earlier in the process.)
Pick students to read these verses: 2 Tim. 2:22 (NIV) Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Emphasize: Notice he says “FLEE!” Not, flirt with. Not slightly avoid. But FLEE!
11. Give an example of how can you FLEE the temptation you mentioned earlier that you face.
And guess what? God will provide a way of escape.
1 Cor 10.13 - "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He won't let you be tempted beyond what you can handle. But when you're tempted, He'll also provide a way out so that you can stand your ground." WRAP UP: Stop temptation at stage one. Don’t flirt with disaster. FLEE.
Let's close by going around the circle and giving you the opportunity to do one of two things: 1. Make an observation about what you learned today. 2. Make a commitment to flee your temptation at stage one. And maybe committing to call a trusted friend or staff member when we're facing temptation. (I'm referring to No. 5)
