Temporary vs. Eternal
Airplane Crash Simulation Night Main Point: To help students
think about eternal things rather than temporary things
Scripture Backing: Matthew 7:24-27
Set up your room like an
airplane. Rows of seats with an isle down the middle. Use whatever resources you
have- a bus would be great, but a room with a bunch of chairs will work just as
good. Have stewardess' bring peanuts, drinks, magazines etc. Jazz it up as much
as you like. After take-off, have the pilot announce trouble- then announce that
the plane will be crashing in 10 minutes. Pass everyone out a piece of paper
and a pen. Have them write a letter to their families. Keep announcing how much
time they have left. Have a stewardess come around and collect them to put in a
fireproof box with 1 minute left. Simulate the crash. Some people have
actually acquired flight crash simulations- others have used scenes from old
Airport movies. Then take volunteers who want to share their letters with
everyone. Pass them back and allow several students to read them aloud.
Wrap Up: Did this crash make you think about things you wish you
would have done or wish you would have said. Most people didn't say that they
wished they watched more T.V. or worked harder at making money- most people
thought about the relationships they have and the relationships they need to
work on. For some of us, the relationship we need to work on the most is our
relationship with God. Close: Tell modern day version of the House
on the Rock. Ask "What are you building your life on . . . temporary things,
or things that last?"
