Respect

Main Point: All people are worthy of respect because of the infinite value God places on each one of us

Supplies:
1. Youth Challenge or Game props
2. Video clip, TV, and VCR if choosing as discussion starter

Kids Arrive: about 6:30-6:45

  • make them feel welcome
  • learn names and interests
  • give new people a New Person Form

    Bring it together: about 7:15pm

"Hey, glad to see you all here. Welcome to ??????

Introduce new people: give them a blow-pop, skittles, or snickers bar, etc.

Youth Challenge: (an up front game/crowdbreaker) Have two students come up and do some challenge against each other. (Chubby bunnies, dollar hop, baby food eating contest, burp contest, etc. Be creative!!!

    Announcements: upcoming activities, events

Games: Choose games from Game List

    Discussion Starters:

Unique game for quick intro to Topic- "Everyone in big circle... now find a partner across the circle from you... now quickly think what your favorite T.V. show is, why you like it and when the last time you saw it was... now on the count of 3 everyone scream it to your partner simultaneously across the circle. One, Two, Three, Go!" (Very frustrating because there is no control and no one can hear a thing).

Quickly ask a few students what their partner said (most won't have a clue) If they don't know, ask why they don't know. Quick discussion questions

    1. Do you like to be listened to?
    2. How do you feel when someone doesn't' listen to you?
    3. Why was this exercise frustrating?

Optional Video Clip from the movie Grand Canyon - "No gun, no respect! That's why I always got the gun."

    Large Group Discussion:
Agree/Disagree with discussion questions- Divide the room in half; declare one side of the room the agree side and one side of the room the disagree side. Read the following statements and have them walk to the appropriate side. Then use the discussion questions provided to get response on why they agreed or disagreed.

    1. All people are worthy of respect. who is worthy of respect? what makes you respect someone?
    2. Once someone loses a persons respect they can never get it back. Why is respect important?
    3. If a person doesn't respect themselves you can't respect them. How do you know if a person respects themselves?
    4. Respect has to be earned. How does a person go about earning it?
    5. There are different kinds of respect. What kinds of respect are there?
    6. Respect is a two way street. What causes someone to disrespect another person? Can a person feel disrespected without being disrespected?
    7. If you respect someone it shows in the way you treat them. How does a person show respect with...? friends, family, others

    Wrap up:

    Tips
    1. Don't confuse anger or pride as self respect
    2. Don't demand from someone what you are not willing to give yourself
    3. If you are not willing to respect someone, you will never know them.

Tell the Good Samaritan story- perhaps modernized

    Ask-
Which one of these guys showed respect to who?
How did he show respect? (because he had mercy)

    Mercy is necessary for respect.

God has shown us respect by his actions. As Jesus died on the cross he looked at the people that were mocking him and those that had sentenced him to death- and he had mercy on them. He said "Father forgive them, they know not what they do." His mercy on all of us deserves a little respect. Seek who God is. Ask us about a relationship with him.
