Movie Reviews

I Love You Man (8/11/2009)

Rated R for pervasive language, including crude and sexual references.

Directed by John Hamburg (Along Came Polly)

Starring Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg and Lou Ferrigno

Todd's Rating: Skip it

I’m not loving this movie, Man.

Peter Klaven's (Paul Rudd) world revolves around his job as a real estate agent and Zooey (Rashida Jones), his soon-to-be fiancée. After he pops the question, she calls her best friends and they immediately go into wedding planning mode. Peter has no male friends and that makes Zooey’s friends wonder if that will make him “that clingy guy?” A better question is, “Who will be his best man?” Zooey, her friends, and Peter's brother Robbie (Andy Samberg) offer to help - but that results in way too many awkward moments. Then, at an open house, Peter meets Sydney, a low-key, likable guy. A friendship develops that's great at first but then threatens Peter's engagement and career.

There really isn’t a lot to say about this film. It’s rated R and stars Paul Rudd. Just in case you’ve been living in a cave for the past five years and missed his other films (Role Models, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up, and The 40 Year Old Virgin), let’s just say I Love You Man is a total raunch-fest.

I’ll go on record here and say that I usually find R-rated comedies very unfunny. In most cases, the content is unnecessary and completely offensive. That is certainly the case for I Love You, Man. Sure there are a few funny moments, but it is way more offensive so I say “Skip It.”

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
I have to say no to this one. The R Rating is for pervasive language and a ton of crude sexual references.
