Movie Reviews
by Jonathan McKee

Aquamarine (6/6/2006)

Rated PG for mild language and sensuality.

Directed by Elizabeth Allen

Starring Emma Roberts, Jo Jo, Sara Paxton, Jake McDorman

Jonathan's Rating: Rental

This film was actually a pleasant surprise from a no-name director with a no-star cast.

I rented it for my daughters, but got caught up in the story and watched it with them.  The story was cute and the acting wasn’t bad for a family film.

The story was about two teenage girls that find a mermaid in their pool.  The mermaid looks for love with help from her new friends.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
The film is pretty innocent for teenagers, although, the film takes place on the beach and there is quite a bit of “eye candy” throughout the film that young hormone infested boys might be distracted with.

Boys might not like it much anyway… the story is really from the female perspective.  This is a good film for girls.

The film is truly an innocent PG.  Just consider the eye candy factor.  There are several scenes where the mermaid’s hair is the only thing covering her presumably naked breasts.  No major cussing other than an abundance of “Oh my God” and a couple “boob” jokes.

Bottom line: I’d let my own girls see it, but would avoid my boy seeing it.  For teenagers, might be a good film for a “girls’ night out.”
