Todd's Rating: Worth Buying
TREKKIES REJOICE!! The greatest adventure of all time begins with Star Trek, the incredible story of a young crew's maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before! I promise that I will not use any of the million Star Trek clichés. No "New Star Trek beams into theaters" lines, no "Warp Speed" or "live long and prosper" jokes. I'm not a Trekkie (don't want to be one) and although I've seen all the movies, I honestly could not give you a synopsis of any of the films without going to imdb.com. But the new Star Trek is flat out awesome!

What does a mutant werewolf, an elite squad of crime fighters who are "non-existent," a teenage wizard who finally made it through puberty, and vehicles that turn into robots have to do with each other? They're just some of the characters Hollywood will use to attract your teens to theaters this summer. Tinsel Town's Big Plans for Summer 2009 As usual, Hollywood has some big plans for the silver screen this summer. They'll be bringing the likes of Captain Kirk, Wolverine, Optimus Prime, Duke Hauser, Harry Potter, the Terminator's John Conner, and a few others, to a theater near you. Summertime is usually the season Hollywood picks to break out the action heroes of our culture; 2009 is no exception. As I look over the list of upcoming releases for this summer, I can't help but make a couple of observations. First, several of these flicks revolve around the central characters' origins. We learn of Wolverine's "creation" in his self-titled movie, Captain Kirk's birth and adolescence in Star Trek, the Autobots and Decepticons beginnings in Transformers II, and the assembly of the international ring of military professionals in G.I. J.O.E. My second observation is this: Gen Y and Gen Z wouldn't have any movies to watch this summer were it not for the heroes (and villains) of Gen X. That's right...I said it! Most of us youth workers, who have become parents ourselves, remember playing with these action figurines and reading their comic books. Now, these characters will help younger generations forge their views on important issues like courage, revenge, duty, and love. With these HUGE movies coming out over the next few weeks, we need to be prepared to weigh in, so we can offer our students a more complete picture on these important issues.
