I get consistent emails from youth workers who are looking for resources for an upcoming parent meeting, parent newsletter or e-newsletter that they send out. Check out our new PARENT RESOURCES page. Enjoy articles you can reprint for parents, information about parenting seminars, and some web links worth checking out. HOLIDAY IDEAS: We just added a new "Holiday Ideas" page that will help you find resources and ideas as various holidays approach. Just pop onto our web site www.TheSource4YM.com and click where it says HOLIDAY IDEAS on the left hand side bar. Check out games, ideas, video clip discussion starters, object lessons and curriculum. Many of these are created with specific holidays in mind; others focus on a topic that works nicely with a specific holiday. For example: find several discussions about family, family hurt/strife, reconciliation, or "leaving a legacy" that might correlate nicely with the upcoming Mother's Day and Father's Day holidays.
Directed by Cory & Todd Edwards Starring the voices of Glenn Close, Anne Hathaway, James Belushi, Chazz Palminteri, Xzibit... JONATHAN'S SCORE: Rental Hoodwinked is a clean entertaining family film, and a great first film for the Edwards brothers. (Cory Edwards is a popular Christian stand-up comedian.) My kids loved it. I enjoyed it... but I'm not going to rush out and buy the DVD. The film tells the tale of "Little Red Riding Hood"... and then some. The story starts with a traditional telling of the tale we all heard as kids. The cops show up and then we hear the story retold from the perspective of each individual character. The writing was extremely creative, delivering some very funny moments that had my family laughing pretty hard. And the talent behind the voices was no joke. I can't believe that even some of the small roles were filled by the likes of Chazz Palminteri (writer and lead in one of my favorite films of all time, A Bronx Tale). The music was also enjoyable. It wasn't Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin...), but it was catchy. And you could tell that a comedian was involved in the creative process. My kids were singing the Shnitzel song long after. And in the spirit of Brad Bird doing the voice of Edna in The Incredibles, Corey Edwards did the voice of Twitchy, the caffeine induced ADHD squirrel that spouts enjoyable lines like: "Shewentpastaporcupineandaredbirdstreeandaguywithalongbeardand shessingingeverywhereshegoessheslikelalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala!" Directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine) Starring Colin Firth, Emma Thompson JONATHAN'S SCORE: Theatre Worthy Mary Poppins would be proud. Nanny McPhee isn't the same ol' thing. Emma Thompson stars as a governess who uses magic to help her bring out the best in seven mischievous children who have chased off every other nanny in the region. Sure, the film's premise might remind us a little bit of Mary Poppins or even The Sound of Music. But Nanny McPhee has a much different flavor. At first I didn't know what to think about Emma Thompson's "McPhee" getup. If you've seen the previews, you've seen the warts, the tooth, the big black dress that rivals the size of a pup tent... but these attributes don't "go" without reason. And Thompson delivers a top notch performance, warts and all. I think the element I appreciated the most was the subtext that people aren't always what they seem. Someone who might appear unwanted, even hideous, might turn out to be our best friend. The Nanny McPhee character grows on you as she grows on the children. Her character development is enveloped in her statement, "When you need me, but do not want me, then I will stay. When you want me, but do not need me, then I have to go." But Thompson wasn't alone with a strong perfomance. Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Celia Imrie and Imelda Staunton are fantastic and will all make you laugh throughout the film. I took my whole family to the screening to get everyone's perspective. My kids were giggling and quoting lines after the film, and my wife liked it more than I did. (I was a little irritated in the beginning-the kids were pretty dang bad!) Over all, it's a great family film. A little bit of gross talk like "fart" and "poop." And the hideous Mrs. Quickly shows you plenty of cleavage. But the film is tame compared to anything else in the theatre. Truly only PG. I didn't regret bringing my kids at all.
