Something You Can Use: Try this at your youth group this week

Randy Young submitted this as an activity that really worked for his group.

This is one of the greatest activities or lessons that I have ever done. I introduced the discussion by talking briefly about "pleasing God" and read some scripture about the children of Israel and how they went back on God.

    1. I gave the youth a paper with three spaces at the top. I asked them to write down the names of three people who, they think, please God. They see this in their life.

    2. Small group or large group discussion:

      A. I went around the group and let each one name the people and tell why they picked them. A few named people in the group. It was a surprise but a reminder that people watch us.

      B. I asked the Youth to tell one thing that they do that pleases God.

      C. I asked if they could think of one thing that they do that does not please God. (You can have them answer this to themselves or give them a time of silence between them and God- use your discretion- sharing out loud may be what God wants)

    3. I had them sign their papers and turn them in.

    4. The next week, I made a certificate on my computer concerning being a person who pleases God. I sent each named person a certificate, told who nominated them. What we were doing and how we did it.

*This was such a blessing to so many. Some were in tears knowing that someone felt this way about them. It was incredible.

Something You May Not Want To Use The Wedgey Relay & Mattress Suicide Another Australian Game Submission

by Jonathan McKee
September 26, 2000

More game submissions from Australia. Definitely worth printing . . . probably not worth trying. Enjoy! (I'm assuming that I don't need to put a disclaimer saying that I'M NOT ENDORSING THESE GAMES!!!)

Wedgey Relay
Divide kids into two teams, and in groups of three. One in each group is nominated as the jockey and then the kids are told what is required of them. The jockey must hold his or her hands behind their head whilst the other two group members lift them by the shorts or trousers (in America- that's UNDERWEAR!) and carry them across the designated distance. Works best as a relay to give it that competitive edge and ensure quality wedgey's.

Mattress Suicide
Divide kids into two teams, opposite ends of your area (about 7 meters apart- how many feet is that?) Have two leaders stand in the middle of the area and hold a thick bed mattress in the air. It should be held vertically so one team can't see the other. On "go" each team sprints towards the mattress and attempts to push it over to the other teams starting area. Try and match teams according to size and gender and you may want to consider bike helmets.

NEXT WEEK: Interview Rebecca St. James

Interview
Rebecca St. James

That's right, Rebecca St. James. Many single male youth workers asked me to ask her if she was single and available. That, along with much more next week!
